Celebrating World Book Day With Under 5s

Thursday 2nd March 2023 is World Book Day! If you have school age children I'm sure you'll be familiar with this special day celebrating books and stories with dressing up and fun activities!

If not, you might be wondering how you and your under 5 can get involved! Here's some of our ideas if you want to head off out for World Book Day:

Take a trip out to spend your book day token!

Book Tokens are vouchers that can be used to purchase any of the special World Book Day £1 books or also used as part payment for any book costing £2.99 or more.

They are given to all children through their school but under 5s don't have to miss out!

You can get book tokens at preschool, nursery, local libraries, some children's magazines as well as in Happy Meals at the moment but the easiest way is to download one!

Some retailers will want a printed copy.

We've spotted about 30 participating retailers in Nottinghamshire including:

The Book Case Lowdham (and some other independent booksellers)

Waterstones

The Works (Mansfield branch have some World Book Day activities happening instore)

WHSmith

Larger supermarkets branches of Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsburys. You can check which stores are participating on the World Book Day website. They're valid until the 26th March.

Head out to your local library!

Most of the Nottinghamshire Libraries are open on Thursday.

These libraries also have their regular rhyme time sessions on a Thursday:

Arnold, Balderton, Forest Town, Hucknall, Mansfield Central and Stapleford (Stapleford library is currently closed for refurbishment).

We haven't seen any specific special events happening at Nottingham libraries this week but visiting and borrowing new books is always exciting too!

Events

There are some family events taking place for World Book Day this week:

Stonebridge City Farm are hosting a World Book Day special event on 2nd March with a character trail and free books to give away.

Sudbury Hal have a World Book Day special on for their Early Years Friday this week (3rd March)

Academy Transformation Trust Further Education College are hosting a Family Book Trail on Sutton Lawn Park on Saturday 4th March 10am-12pm

Erewash Museum have a World Book Day special event on Saturday 4th March with a trail, storytelling and crafts

I do have to say I was surprised that there's not more going on for under 5s on actual World Book Day - maybe I should host something next year?! It's got me thinking...!
